Synthesis of cerium phosphates by thermal polycondensation of mixtures CeO/sub 2/-NH/sub 4/H/sub 2/PO/sub 4/ and investigation of their structure

Journal Article · · J. Solid State Chem.; (United States)
Processes of thermal condensation in the mixtures CeO/sub 2/ and NH/sub 4/H/sub 2/PO/sub 4/ at 200-1400/sup 0/C have been studied with the methods of differential thermal analysis, chemical and X-ray analysis, paper chromatography, and IR spectroscopy. Methods for obtaining double phosphates of cerium-ammonium Ce/sub 3/(NH/sub 4/)/sub 2/H(PO/sub 4/)/sub 5/, CeNH/sub 4/HP/sub 3/O/sub 10/, CeNH/sub 4/P/sub 4/O/sub 12/ (monoclinic), and Ce(NH/sub 4/)/sub 2/(PO/sub 3/)/sub 5/ have been elaborated. The structure of Ce(NH/sub 4/)/sub 2/(PO/sub 3/)/sub 5/ has been determined. The compound is monoclinic; unit cell parameters are a = 8.598(3) A, b = 11.733(3) A, c = 13.375(4) A, ..beta.. = 90.48(2)/sup 0/, Z = 4; space group Cc. Ce(NH/sub 4/)/sub 2/(PO/sub 3/)/sub 5/ is a polyphosphate with five tetrahedra in the identity period of the chains. On the basis of the obtained data a scheme for interaction of crystalline and amorphous heating products of the mixtures CeO/sub 2/ and NH/sub 4/H/sub 2/PO/sub 4/ dependent on the initial ratio of components P/Ce and temperature has been devised.
