The authors test a reduced-iron promoted fused catalyst comprised of divanadium pentoxide, dialuminium trioxide, and silicon dioxide in the heterogeneous dehydrocyclization of 1,4-butanediol. The reaction products were analyzed by chromatography and mass spectroscopy and include n-butanol, di-n-butylene glycol, tetrahydrofuran, butyrolactone, and 4-hydroxybutanal, as well as traces of unreacted butanediol. Kinetics and yields are analyzed from the standpoint of the catalysis mechanism.
