The Forest Response Research Program has been set up to study acid rain. It is a major cooperative research effort between federal agencies and the private sector. The program received funding in the form of seven grants totaling $1.05 million, to go toward research on possible effects of acid rain on spruce-fir forests. The program is divided into six study areas. Under the first, the National Vegetation Survey, the extent of unexplained damage to forests is being measured. Second is the EPA-sponsored Atmospheric Deposition Monitoring Support Project, which provides deposition monitoring at intensively studies sites. The final four studies are aimed at determining the actual biological and chemical effects of acid rain on different forest types and deciding what actions, if any might be taken to mitigate or control those effects.
