This patent describes a process for the beneficiation of coal by froth flotation comprising surface treating particulate coal with a polymerizable monomer, a polymerization catalyst and a liquid organic carrier thereby rendering the particulate coal hydrophobic and oleophilic. The surface treated particulate coal is also introduced to a froth flotation vessel containing a water wash medium thereby resulting in a froth phase and an aqueous phase. The improvement described here comprises pre-treating the water wash medium prior to introducing the surface treated particulate coal with an organic carboxylic acid or alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof.
