Method for the beneficiation of oxidized coal

A process is described for modifying the surfaces of oxidized coal and beneficiating the coal, the process comprising the steps of: (i) subjecting coal having oxidized surfaces to high shear agitation in water; (ii) desliming the coal mixture resulting from step (i); and (iii) introducing the deslimed coal mixture resulting from step (ii) to froth flotation beneficiation, the froth flotation beneficiation comprising admixing the deslimed coal mixture with a surface treating mixture comprised of a polymerizable monomer, a catalyst and a liquid organic carrier.
