Installation of a microcomputer-based scheduling system by Esso U.K. plc, London, for its new Midline pipeline system has proven valuable in planning and scheduling during and after pipeline start-up. The system was provided by Scicon Ltd., Milton Keynes, U.K., and delivered some 10 weeks before the pipeline began operations in December 1985. The software runs on a DEC Micro-VAX microcomputer and takes as its starting point the volumes to be shipped to each terminal. The scheduler uses this information to produce a monthly plan and subsequently to produce detailed pumping programs. Reports are produced in a format ready for immediate Telexing to shippers, refineries, terminals, and operating personnel. Twenty-one different Telex-reports may be sent by a direct link between the computer and the Telex network.
