Harmonic distortion in power-distribution systems

The increasing numbers of nonlinear loads in the power-distribution system raises concerns about the wave-form distortion that these elements introduce. Harmonic currents propagating in the power-distribution network may cause malfunction of some electric devices. Insulation stresses and probably equipment failure, and larger ohmic losses may occur. The above effects are accentuated in the event of resonance conditions. This dissertation deals with the modeling and simulation of the harmonic distortion generation and propagation in the distribution feeders. Models for nonlinear loads and for distribution system components at fundamental and harmonic frequencies are included in the developed harmonic power program (HPF3PH). The objective of this study is to provide an effective simulation tool to help in setting limits on the permissible harmonic injection and on the penetration level of disturbing loads in a realistic way. Also, the simulation program can be used to plan the size and location of power-factor correction capacitors to avoid undersired resonances.
