Hydro project updates

While the totals for the year are not in yet, a respectable number of hydropower license and exemption applications were submitted to the FERC in 1985. As of September 30th, the FERC reported that 296 license and 172 exemption applications had been received. Increased intervention from state agencies over environmental and recreational issues, and implementation of the cluster impact assessment procedure in additional river basins are expected to contribute to a slowdown in the rate of hydro development in 1986. Coupled with possible changes in the tax laws - such as the House proposal to place hydropower equipment in a 30 year straight-line depreciation category - hydro developers will have their hands full. A number of projects which have worked their way through the regulatory and financial maze and either come on line recently or commenced construction are presented.
