Proton induced spectra from /sup 12/C, /sup 27/Al, /sup 58/Ni and /sup 206/Pb were measured at 300, 400 and at 500 MeV in the 16/sup 0/ to 40/sup 0/ range using the medium resolution spectrometer at TRIUMF. The continuum (p,p') spectra show strong peaks attributable to quasi-free scattering (QFS) at all angles forward and inclusive of 30/sup 0/ for all nuclei, while at angles backward of 30/sup 0/ the spectra show evidence of QFS for /sup 12/C at 35/sup 0/, and 40/sup 0/ and for /sup 58/Ni only at 35/sup 0/. The QFS peaks were observed to be most prominent at forward angles with the broadening increasing towards larger angles. The dependence of the position of the QFS peaks on angle was similar to, but, slightly lower than, that for free nucleon-nucleon scattering. A calculation which took the momentum of the target nucleons as that of a degenerate Fermi gas and which used experimentally established nucleon-nucleon T matrix, reproduced the broadening of the QFS peaks quite well. The attenuation at the position of the QFS peak was extracted by adjusting the height of the calculated peak to the data. By using an attenuation calculation in which the nucleus was taken as a hard-sphere as well as that of a Woods-Saxon distribution for the matter density, the mean-free-path of protons were calculated to be 3.7 +/- 0.5 fm. and 2.5 +/- 0.6 fm. for the hard-sphere and the Woods-Saxon case, respectively.
