Over the past 20 years, a number of scientific studies have suggested that exposure to 60-hertz (Hz) electric and magnetic fields (EMF) may be associated with human health effects, including an increased risk of cancer. Common sources of 60-Hz electric and magnetic fields include power lines, electrical wiring, ground return currents, and appliances. Some epidemiology studies have found a link between EMF exposure and certain types of cancer; however, the results of these studies are not conclusive. The scientific research that has been conducted to date (including epidemiology studies and research conducted on whole animals and cells, as well as human volunteers) has been unable to positively prove or disprove the existence of significant health effects from EMF. This report presents the major results, activities, and findings of current and ongoing EMF-related health effects research covering the time period June 1991 to May 1992. The report reviews research results from epidemiology studies, human studies, whole animal investigations, cell-level laboratory studies, exposure assessments, and engineering studies.
