The Chronar Corp. of Princeton, NJ introduced a cost-competitive amorphous-silicon photovoltaic cell at the International Solar Energy Exposition in Houston. Selling for $4 to $7 per peak-watt according to the volume of the sale, the new cell will undercut single-crystal silicon cells 15 to 20% and will complete with power generated by nuclear, coal, and oil. Chronar's cells will have an energy-conversion efficiency of 10%. The company is ready to market residential systems, but also wants to build turnkey solar-manufacturing plants. (DCK)
