Photovoltaic technology progress and market outlook

Conference · · Conf. Rec. IEEE Photovoltaic Spec. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5379657
A detailed summary of the major technical options for photovoltaic cells are presented. Key conclusions are: that single crystal Czochralski silicon cells will have 30-40% of the world market by 1990; that one half of the single crystal cells will be sold for concentrators; that semicrystalline silicon cells will serve at least 25% of the world market in 1990; that ribbon and/or thin film silicon will serve about 15-20% of the world market in 1990; that amorphous silicon can serve 15-20% of the 1990 market; and that no compound semiconductor will have more than 5% of the world market. The average prices for 1984 are forecast to be $6 per Watt (1982$). The module prices for 1986 are forecast to be $4/Watt (1982$), and by 1990 average prices of $3/Watt are expected. A market of 100MW in 1986 and over 500MW in 1990 is forecast. The total market, size of key segments and prices to 1990 are presented.
