Review of the Soviet gas industry in 1988

The Soviet gas industry has continued to perform impressively in 1988, and continues to be the world's leading producer of natural gas. Natural gas output in the USSR rose by 43 billion cubic meters (5.9%) in 1988, to 770 billion cubic meters (BCM). This was nearly identical to the rate of growth achieved last year. This total was reported as 18 BCM above the plan target, which was even more than the 15 BCM in extra obligations assigned the industry in the fall of 1987. Data are given on the geographical distribution of natural gas production. Contributions from individual fields are described and other aspects of the natural gas industry are discussed.
