Natural gas production continued to expand in 1987, increasing by 6.0% to 727 billion cubic meters (BCM). In 1988, the plan target is 767 BCM; it is also planned to put into operation 11,000 kilometers of pipeline, 62 compressor stations, and three gas preparation facilities. The major source of the expansion in 1987 was the large fields of northern Tyumen' Oblast, especially Urengoy. The Yamburg field also produced a much greater amount of gas in 1987 than in 1986. All together, these fields apparently produced 424 BCM in 1987, or 58% of total Soviet gas output; in 1988, they are expected to produce 60%. Overall, West Siberia (including oilfield gas) accounted for 62% of Soviet output in 1987. Details are given about production at all major fields. Accidents, pipeline developments, and gas preparation plants capacity are also described.
