A wood gasification demonstration project for the Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital

Conference · · Alternative Energy Sources; (United States)
OSTI ID:6888462
The Georgia Forestry Commission and the Georgia Tech Engineering Experiment Station have been co-operating on wood energy projects in the state since 1977. This paper describes such a joint project which has recently been started up. The third participant in the project was the Applied Engineering Company (APCO) of Orangeburg, South Carolina, and the overall goal of the project was to demonstrate a ''state-of-the-art'' technology for the use of wood energy at a state installation. A 19,000 lb/hr gas/oil package boiler at the Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital in Rome, Georgia was retrofitted with a wood gasification system of 25 million Btu/hr. This unit became operational in the fall of 1980 and its use will lower the hospital's dependence on fuel oil and natural gas. The full time operation of the gasifier will also provide a new market for low grade hardwood chips in North Georgia. This paper outlines the design and construction of the gasification system and briefly discusses the system economics.
