Iran's mammoth gas program to eliminate flaring by 1980

Today's Middle East reserves and production figures are impressive, but tomorrow's plans are staggering. Middle East countries are gearing up to halt gas flaring, recover NGL, expand reserves, enhance recovery, conserve energy, and industrialize. Just to capture associated gas now being flared will cost $25 billion, and that is only a start. Middle East oil producers are plowing enormous sums into their economies, creating a market and a construction boom never before equalled. This special report tells where the money goes and what it will accomplish. National Iranian Oil Co. (NIOC) is pressing forward with its $8-billion project to harness the country's gas reserves. On completion in the early 1980s, as much as 9.0 billion cfd will be gathered and processed. The gas will be exported, consumed domestically, and used for oil-reservoir pressure maintenance. The project includes a second gas trunkline (IGAT II) to the Soviet Union, parallel to the first. A third line, for the western part of Iran, is under consideration. NIOC'S 5-yr plan calls for the elimination of gas flaring by 1980. All associated gas will be gathered and, after liquids separation, reinjected or sold.
