Iran shooting for global status as gas producer

Journal Article · · Oil Gas J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6886877
Iran has set itself the ambitious goal of becoming the world's largest natural gas producer and exporter. With 21.33% of world reserves, Iran is the richest gas country next to the U.S.S.R. Heretofore, vast amounts of associated gas have been flared--56% of total output, or about 3 billion ft/sup 3//day. Now, however, National Iranian Gas Co. has launched a 4-pronged program to forge a major natural gas industry: reinjecting vast quantities of associated and nonassociated gas into the Khuzestan oil fields, building up domestic gas consumption and switching away from oil, establishing Iran as a major producer of petrochemicals, and building up exports of gas and LNG.
