Integrated exploration --new trend for the 80s
Workstations of the type described will provide to the oil and gas exploration community an intelligent, interactive computer graphics system for use in interpreting well logs and seismic data. The workstation will be an integrated system combining the hardware and software required to support the explorationist, and will have the capability to communicate with the user's central host computer to access corporate data sets. It will be oriented towards use by professional geophysicists and geologists as well as by technical support personnel, with neither group expected to be computer experts. The advantages of the workstation approach are several fold. Due to the nature of the product, the user will be able to create a local exploration data base, thereby considerably simplifying his problem of retrieving and coordinating the data required for his work. Since the standalone workstation is capable of executing exploration applications, the user will realize a response time that is independent of whatever compute contention problems may exist on a multi-use host computer. The workstation based approach will permit the explorationist to complete his prospect evaluation more quickly, thereby resulting in a measurable economic efficiency. The economics of the workstation approach to support the explorationist as compared to the shared cost of a mainframe computer will also be extremely attractive. Finally, and perhaps most important, will be the potential for better solutions than are now possible via the explorationist's ability to manipulate his data in ways that are not currently possible. In addition, he will have a greatly improved opportunity to bring his interpretive intuition into play via interaction with a new and expanding series of applications.
