This article presents five applications of CAEX systems. Interactive workstations are changing the look and feel of petroleum exploration and development. More sophisticated than a PC, less intimidating than a mainframe, the workstation offers interpreters instant access to vast volumes of seismic data, and vivid new ways to visualize elusive reservoirs. Computer-aided exploration and development (CAEX) systems let geophysicists slice a 3-D data cube like a piece of fruit, alter its appearance with color graphics and seismic displays. This system provides better pictures of the subsurface.
