New Brunswick LNG, Western Canada gas swap has been urged by D. D. Lougheed (Imperial Oil Ltd.) as a possible alternative to a proposal by Alberta Gas Trunk Line Co. Ltd. and Petro-Canada Ltd. to extend the existing gas-pipeline network that supplies Montreal to Quebec City and perhaps the Maritime Provinces. According to Lougheed, the proposed pipeline is not practical owing to the dispersed population and industry in the Maritimes (gas could supply only 10-20% of the total energy demand in that area and unit costs would be high) and to the possibility that the Maritimes will become energy self-sufficient if offshore exploration is successful. Lougheed has thus proposed that New Brunswick industries buy LNG (which would be regasified at Tenneco LNG Inc.'s proposed $650 million LNG terminal and regasification center at Lorneville, N.B.) at the same price as that of pipelined Western Canada gas in Toronto, and in turn buy equal amounts of Western Canada gas for delivery to Tenneco in Western Canada.
