This monograph assists health care managers to cope successfully with the energy-induced transition era we are entering. It also provides a strategic planning framework and rationale for taking immediate action. Energy conservation planning, as an integral component of a hospital's long-range strategic planning activity, is seen as a major tool which will assist hospital managers in responding to coming energy price increases and energy shortages. Furthermore, by implementing energy conservation action plans, transition-era health care managers will both reduce current energy requirements for their facilities and prepare their staff, their patients, and their communities for greater awareness of the many problems associated with the energy crisis.
