Can lime kiln show the way to cheaper shale oil

Sohio Petroleum, a subsidiary of Standard Oil of Ohio has a new technique to extract oil from shale. The technique originally designed by Paraho Development Co. for calcining limestone employs a vertical, cylindrical retort, or kiln, with a patented grate mechanism to insure continuous, even flow of material through the vessel. It is hoped that the adaptation to shale will perform as expected and eliminate one of the materials handling bottlenecks that have been holding back shale oil development. So far, 5 sponsors have pledged $500,000 each for a 30-mo. pilot plant project. If 10 additional firms sign on by May, the semiworks plant could be ready to operate within 5 mo. The demonstration project will be conducted at the federally owned Anvil Points shale unit near Rifle, Colo. If it works out, it could be the key to unlocking the Green River Formation that contains 1.8 trillion bbl of oil.
