Groundwater heat-pump HVAC demonstration project. Phase I. Design development. Final report
Groundwater heat pumps have significantly higher efficiencies in the Texas Gulf Coast Region than conventional Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning systems (HVAC). With extensive groundwater sources on the Gulf Coast, consumers can derive potential energy savings between 30 and 50 percent by switching to groundwater heat pumps. At present utility rates (1978 figures), payback periods are typically six years or less compared to gas heating and three years compared to electric heating. This study reports the investigation of heat pump technology and application in the Gulf Coast area and provides the following information: introduction to energy needs, basic heat pump technology, history of the development of groundwater heat pump systems, conceptual design of groundwater heat pump systems, regulatory and environmental considerations, and references.
