Development and application of the energy analysis program to HVAC systems

A Building energy calculation and analysis program (BECAP) was developed to estimate energy consumption of HVAC systems and to evaluate energy conservation of each subsystem such as air conditioning, pumping system, cooing and heating plant. It also allows for the economic analysis for each energy saving method. The database of the cost for air conditioning system, pumping system and cooling and heating plant were developed, and the database for energy cost was also generated for the economic assessment of energy saving methods. The developed program was applied to the sample office building. The program was validated by comparing the simulation data with the monitored data for energy consumption in HVAC systems. The appropriate energy conservation opportunity was also examined by comparing energy saving for the new system with that for the conventional system. For the selected sample building, variable water volume (VWV) pumping system was the most efficient energy saving method with simple payback of 2 years, and the total enthalpy heat exchanger was also a reasonable method to conserve energy consumption with a payback of 4 years.
