Unique features of lasing in injection lasers for short pump pulses

An analysis is given of the lasing in an injection laser, using the rate equations for pumping with current pulses with a duration comparable to or less than the time required to establish the steady-state condition. The delay in the lasing and the shape of the radiation pulses, as well as the watt-ampere characteristic of the lasers, are examined, and an experimental study is made of the lasing radiation in a heterolaser for pumping nanosecond pulses. It is shown that under short pulse conditions the output characteristic has the shape of a smoothed step-function curve, and the conditions for obtaining a single pulse are discussed.
