Lasing of polycrystalline Cr{sup 2+}:ZnSe pumped by a pulse-periodic Tm:YLF laser

The output characteristics of a laser based on polycrystalline Cr{sup 2+}:ZnSe obtained by diffusion annealing are studied upon pumping by a cw-diode-pumped Q-switched Tm:YLF laser operating at a wavelength of 1.908 {mu}m with a pulse repetition rate of 2 kHz. Efficient pulse-periodic lasing is obtained in the region of 2.32 {mu}m with a total efficiency of {approx}17%, a pulse duration of {approx}45 ns, and an average power of {approx}1 W.
