Methanation

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6883190

Phillips Petroleum Co. has almost doubled the catalytic activity of molybdenum - which has excellent thermal stability during the methanation process - by mixing molybdenum oxide with copper oxide to a final copper/molybdenum ratio of 2:1. The preferred conditions for the conversion of CO and H/sub 2/ to CH/sub 4/ with this alumina-supported catalyst are temperatures of 840/sup 0/-1020/sup 0/F (450/sup 0/-550/sup 0/C), pressures of 100-2000 psig, and space velocities of 600-5000/hr. In methanation tests at 1020/sup 0/F (550/sup 0/C) and t psig, a standard molybdenum catalyst showed only fair activity with 12.6% conversion, whereas the improved substance converted 39.6% of the synthesis gas to methane.
