Catalyst for methanation and method for the preparation thereof
Unlike conventional nickel methanation catalysts, this Japanese version incorporates a binary active ingredient composed of a nickel-molybdenum alloy and a molybdenum carbide supported on a porous carrier. The catalyst preparation involves heating an intermediate (oxides of nickel and molybdenum) in an H/sub 2/-CO mixture at 930/sup 0/-1290/sup 0/F (500/sup 0/-700/sup 0/C) after an H/sub 2/-reduction step at 750/sup 0/-1650/sup 0/F (400/sup 0/-900/sup 0/C). The best carrier is a mixture or a composite of magnesium and aluminum oxides. With this novel catalyst, the methanation reaction can proceed at high temperatures (1200/sup 0/F or 650/sup 0/C), which greatly facilitates heat recovery from the gaseous product.
