Ultrasonic detection of molten/solid interfaces of weld pools

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6881252
Results of the study indicate that it is possible to detect molten weld-pool interfaces and obtain information about their size and location using ultrasonic techniques. The study has also identified problems which must be solved before the technique can be used for weld process control: (1) making a positive identification of reflected ultrasonic signals, i.e., distinguishing between signals reflected from the molten/solid interface or from solid/air surfaces in the vicinity of the weld pool, and from grain boundaries in the heat-affected-zone; and (2) determining the effect of temperature gradients near the molten zone on the propagation of ultrasonic waves which affects the ability to accurately measure weld-pool interface location.
