Ultrasonic detection of molten/solid interfaces of weld pools

Ultrasonic techniques are being studied for the detection and location of the liquid/solid interfaces of molten weld pools in metals during the welding process. The objective of the study is to develop a technique for sensing the depth or lateral position of a weld pool and providing a real-time control signal to the welder to achieve a completely automated, process-controlled welding system. Experimental results illustrating the feasibility and limitations of the technique are presented. 10 references.
