A survey covers the work of the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Joint Project on the Prevention and Cleanup of Pollution of the Marine Environment from Shipping, which is directly related to the equipment, regulations, and organization necessary to prevent the operational discharge from shipping of oil, petroleum products, and chemicals into navigable waters, and the cleanup and minimizing of damage to the marine environment when those pollutants are released; marine environmental protection regulations, e.g., regulations for the prevention of discharges from ships which are written by the U.S.S.R. Ministry of the Maritime Fleet and the U.S.S.R. Ministry of the River Fleet; regulations for cleaning polluted waters in port areas; oil spill response plans in the Black Sea/Azov Sea basin; and oil spill response equipment, e.g., floating weir skimmers and harbor skimmers.
