U.S. maritime, oil, and oil spill cleanup companies have formed more than 100 oil spill cooperatives, whose purpose is the quick-reaction containment of marine oil spills. Oil spill cooperatives on the East Coast, West Coast, and Gulf of Mexico are discussed. The maritime industry takes measures, such as the assurance of safe navigability within harbors, to prevent marine oil pollution. The activities of oil spill cleanup contractors are described. Salvage companies try to recover oil from vessels before spillage can occur. There are several training schools and programs dealing with prevention, containment, and control of marine oil pollution.
