A model of elastic pp and p-barp scattering at high energies is discussed in which the ordinary Regge poles are supplemented by a simple term describing the growth of the total cross sections. Interference of this term with the Regge terms leads to the result that the polarization of the protons is appreciably different from zero at the energies of the existing and planned accelerators and has a characteristic oscillatory dependence on the momentum transfer. It is concluded that measurement of the polarization at high energies is one of the main means of investigating the mechanism of the growth of the total cross sections. In this work we have made a detailed comparison of the model with experiment and have found excellent agreement with the data on cross sections and polarization phenomena in elastic pp and p-barp scattering at energies E> or =10 GeV and momentum transfers -t< or =2 (GeV/c)/sup 2/, where double spin flip is neglected. The effects of the growing term in various experiments are analyzed. Predictions of the polarization in pp scattering at 300 and 1000 GeV are given.
