DeepStar team set to tackle major engineering challenges

Journal Article · · Petroleum Engineer International; (United States)

The DeepStar concept employs a phased development strategy consisting of three major stages: exploration/delineation drilling (phase 1), evaluation/early production (phase 2) and full field development (phase 3). Currently, the project is finishing the first part of phase 2 and beginning phase 2A, which is a continuation of prototype well and field studies. The total efforts are geared toward designing the hardware and systems needed to complete a full deepwater field development. As the DeepStar project enters its third year, work is progressing on developing an economic deepwater production strategy through improved technology and equipment. At the beginning of phase 2A, some of the more challenging hurdles include produced fluids and deepwater produced fluids and deepwater production risers concepts. These and other problems and their solutions are discussed.
