A method and additive are described for scavenging oxygen dissolved and entrained in liquids. The additive is particularly suitable for removing dissolved and entrained oxygen from polymer-containing fluids used in drilling, well completion, waterflooding, and other procedures performed in the oil field. The oxygen scavenger additive is sodium dithionite (sodium hydrosulfite) or a mixture thereof with sodium dithionate dispersed in a liquid carrier, such as a hydrocarbon. (5 claims)
