Water flooding process

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6437274
This waterflooding process inhibits ferric hydroxide plugging of water flood injection wells. In the process there is incorporated into the aqueous injection fluid, a small but effective amount of a water-soluble hydro-sulfite (such as potassium, sodium, or ammonium hydrosulfite) to obviate or at least reduce the plugging of the oil formation by ferric hydroxide. Incorporation of the hydrosulfite eliminates oxygen-promoted corrosion of equipment and, at the same time, prevents the oxidation of ferrous chemical species to insoluble ferric hydroxide. The hydrosulfite ion is compatable with water-soluble, polymeric mobility control agents that may be incorporated into the injection fluid. Beneficial results are realized by the use of from 5 to as much as 10,000 ppm by weight of the hydrosulfite additive, based on the weight of the injection fluid. (6 claims)
