A new concept, channel gasification, was investigated by means of a small exploratory module, and found promising. This concept was incorporated into a prototype biomass furnace with a gasification primary stage and a gas combustion secondary stage. Initial tests were made with corncobs as fuel and with the exhaust used for direct drying of corn. Four batches of corn of about 21 cubic meters (600 bu) each were dried from about 21.5 percent m.c. to 15 percent m.c. About 6.3 MJ/kg (2700 Btu/lb) of water evaporated were required, indicating that one-third of the cobs can normally dry the grain. (Refs. 6).
