  1. Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co., Stockholm (Sweden)
Each year, Sweden's 12 nuclear plants produce 250 tons of high-level radioactive waste, reports Per-Eric Ahlstroem, vice president of the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) in Stockholm. SKB currently oversees the handling and disposal of all radioactive waste generated by Sweden's nuclear facilities. The company temporarily stores high-level waste in an interim storage facility located 22 miles south of Stockholm, Ahlstroem says. This storage facility will contain the spent fuel for 40 years while SKB evaluates suitable long-term disposal options. The site selection process has begun, Ahlstroem reports, and the facility will be funded by a surcharge on nuclear-generated electricity.
