The study was conducted for solid waste pyrolysis processes, including the Andco-Torrax process developed by Andco Inc., the Purox process developed by Union Carbide Corp., and the Flash Pyrolysis process developed by Occidental Research Corp. Markets for electricity generated by the Andco-Torrax process, Purox gas, and Flash Pyrolysis oil were studied for 500, 1000, and 1500 ton/day plants for several sites in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and Ventura Counties, Calif. Capital cost estimates were escalated to the midpoint of the estimated construction period. Prices for pyrolytic products were estimated using average fuel cost data from the Southern California Edison Co. The costs for site preparation, building equipment, labor and administration, transportation of solid waste to the facility and of residues away from the facility and utilities were included in the estimates of the economics of each system. The excluded factors included capitilized interest during construction and bond issuing expenses, state and sales taxes, acquisition of right-of-way costs, and land purchase. The net system costs for the primary sites selected for the first year of operation and the estimated capital costs for these sites are presented.
