A survey covers the nature of the waste; resource recovery, including metals; the chemistry of the pyrolysis process; the various existing pyrolysis systems, including Union Carbide Corp.'s vertical shaft reactor, Occidental Research Corp.'s flash-pyrolysis plant for liquid fuels, the Monsanto/Landgard system to produce synthesis gas, which is used to make steam, and the Andco/Torrax system, which uses air instead of oxygen and raw refuse as feed, with the hot offgases used to make steam; and nitrogen-free synthesis gas utilization and costs.
