Incoherent optical pump sources for lasers based on surface discharges

The inherent low inductance of surface discharges permits large-area optical sources to be constructed which produce short-pulsewidth, intense radiation suitable for pumping or preionizing laser media. The technical efficiencies for pumpbands in the soft-UV through visible spectral regions are generally inferior to those for optimized, short-pulse flashlamps (typically by 20--50%). The specific radiated energy and radiant excitance produced by high-power planar surface discharges, however, can easily exceed the corresponding capabilities for flashlamps.
