A four-point bending jig was used to determine the cyclic fatigue behavior of one hot-pressed and two different sintered silicon nitrides. The lowest fatigue strengths were obtained in the cyclic tension compression mode, indicating that compressive stresses are effective in advancing the growth of subcritical cracks. Hot-pressed silicon nitride fatigue resistance was superior to that of the sintered materials. Long fatigue lives can be anticipated from these materials at stress levels 2/3 lower than the bend strength.
