Symmetric and asymmetric fission of nuclei lighter than thorium
Experimental investigations of the mass and energy distributions of the fission fragments of nuclei with Zapprox. <90 in the region of low and intermediate energies are reviewed. The topics covered are mainly related to new information obtained in recent years, specifically, the limits of existence of asymmetric fission as a phenomenon, the two independent fission modes (symmetric and asymmetric) and, more generally, the mode structure of the mass and energy distributions of the fragments, symmetric fission as an object of the liquid-drop model, the formation of the mass distributions, and so forth. The main conclusion of the investigations is that the theoretically predicted valley structure of the fission barrier of pre-actinide nuclei has been experimentally confirmed.
