Experimental investigation of the region of existence of asymmetric fission in light nuclei

Mass and energy distributions of fragments in fission of /sup 201/Tl--/sup 209/Bi are measured in reactions induced by protons and ..cap alpha.. particles. These distributions show that the contribution of the asymmetric component observed previously in the nuclei /sup 208/Po--/sup 213/At drops rapidly with decrease of the mass of the nucleus and apparently is cut off at /sup 201/Tl. Thus, a lower limit is established for the region of existence of asymmetric fission: Aapprox. =200, Zapprox. =80. A qualitative interpretation is given for the main properties of the asymmetric fission of preactinide nuclei.
