Cross sections have been measured for fission of the target nuclei /sup 209/Bi, /sup 205/Tl, /sup 197/Au, and /sup 185/Re by 40--70 MeV protons and /sup 209/Bi, /sup 206/Pb, /sup 197/Au, /sup 185/Re, /sup 182/W, and /sup 177/Hf by 40--80 MeV ..cap alpha.. particles. In analysis of the fissility of the nuclei we used a statistical description with inclusion of nucleon pairing correlations and collective and shell effects in the level density. A number of the simplifications of early studies have been removed and in terms of the improved approach we have determined the fission thresholds for preactinide nuclei from /sup 181/W to /sup 213/At.
