Study of adsorption of pyridine on ..cap alpha..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, calcined at 1150/sup 0/C for 12 or 22 hr showed that the length of treatment influenced the surface behavior. An analysis of the computer-resolved IR spectra suggested that a variable number of aluminum ions still possess a tetrahedral or quasi-tetrahedral coordination, which results in two types of pyridine species coordinated to octahedral and tetrahedral Lewis acid sites. The total coverage on both materials was Vertical Bar3; 20Vertical Bar3< at 8 mm Hg; the concentration of defective aluminum centers able to coordinate pyridine was approx. 1 and approx. 0.5/sq nm on the less and more severely treated alumina, respectively.
