Kinetics and products of the reaction between sodium nitrite and bisulfite

The kinetics and products of the reaction between (sodium) nirite and bisulfite were studied at 50/sup 0/C, pH 5.5-7.5, and 0.0325-0.26 and 0.0217-0.043 mole/l. bisulfite and nitrite, respectively, i.e., the reaction conditions typical of the wet flue gas denitrification/desulfurization process. The reaction rate was fairly high at pH Vertical Bar3; 6. At sulfite/nitrite molar ratio Vertical Bar3; 2:1, the main reaction product was hydroxylamine disulfonate (HADS); but at greater than or equal to 2:1 HADS was gradually reduced to amine (mainly imido) sulfonate. Since the rate of the reaction between HADS and bisulfite is extremely slow, high temperature and a high sulfite concentration were necessary to produce imido sulfonate. In a calcium sulfite solution where a pH of below 5 was necessary to accelerate the reaction, the product formed was HADS rather than amine sulfonate, probably because of the very low solubility of calcium sulfite, and thus, negligible HADS reaction with sulfite. Based on these results, a study is being carried out on absorbent regeneration and reaction product treatment in the wet NO/sub x/ removal process.
