Kinetics and products of the reaction between nitrite and bisulfite

The reaction between nitrite and bisulfite is particularly dependent on the molar ratio of the reactants and the pH value of the solution. When the molar ratio is less than 2, the main reaction product is hydroxylamine disulfonate. When the ratio is 2 or more, hydroxylamine disulfonate is gradually reduced and imido sulfonate is formed. Since the rate of the reaction between hydroxylamine disulfonate and bisulfite is extremely slow, high temperature and a high sulfite concentration are necessary to produce imido sulfonate. Based on the results of the studies reported here, additional research is being conducted on rational methods for absorbent regeneration and reaction product treatment for application to the wet NO/sub x/ removal process. 5 figures.
