At the present time, heavy tars produced from still bottoms are widely used as binders in roadbuilding. The binder content of the mixtures used for road surfacing does not exceed 7 to 8%, but these materials can have a quite significant effect. The feedstock for production of STK binders is the still bottoms from benzole rectification. Production of STK binders reduces to distilling off the water and light fractions (benzene hydrocarbons and light oils), followed by isothermal holding intended to increase the viscosity of the still bottoms. This article describes an investigation of the quality of heavy tars produced from the still bottoms remaining after final rectification of benzole as a function of a number of technological factors. Regression equations were obtained. The optimum process conditions were determined.
