A multistage refrigeration system for product-display cases, is described comprising: (a) a housing defining a temperature controlled refrigerating zone; (b) expansion and evaporating means disposed in the housing for utilizing pressurized liquid refrigerant to refrigerate the refrigerating zone; (c) high-stage compressor means and condenser means connected in series and disposed in an equipment location remote from the housing for supplying pressurized liquid refrigerant; (d) first conduit means for communicating pressurized liquid refrigerant from the condenser means to the expansion and evaporating means; (e) a low-stage refrigeration compressor disposed in the housing for compressing gaseous refrigerant received from the evaporating means, the low-stage compressor operating in response to the cooling load in the refrigerating zone to maintain the desired temperature in the refrigerating zone; (f) second conduit means for communicating compressed refrigerant from the low-stage compressor to the high-stage compressor means in the equipment location; and (g) a liquid/suction heat exchanger disposed in the housing for utilizing cold refrigerant vapor for the evaporating means to cool liquid refrigerant supplied to the expansion and evaporating means.
